What can a mural do for you?

Murals are a great way to create atmosphere in a room.   The combination of a trained eye, a talented hand and a little paint can transform a plain wall into anything you could think of.  Murals are the finishing touches that tie all the elements of your home or business together.  From full wall paintings that give the illusion of looking out onto a courtyard, to small elements such as a delicate butterfly resting on a window sill, murals are a wonderful addition to any decor.  Murals personalize your space, add interest, and can even  solve design problems such as what to do with that niche in your hallway that no matter what you put in it it never looks right!

What is Trompe l'oeil?

Trompe l'oeil is French for "trick of the eye" which means that a trompe l'oeil mural is a painting that looks like something it is not.  It is a realistic style which is the most technically difficult types of murals to paint and my favorite.  It takes an understanding of vanishing points, sights lines, and shadow casting to make a trompe l'oeil mural believable.  Thankfully for me (and for you) I used to create perspective drawings for contractors of things like decks, patio covers, and new homes, which was great practice for creating realistic trompe l'oeil murals.  What good is a mural of a window looking out onto a tropical beach if you don't have the sense that any minute a warm ocean breeze will carry the soft smell of plumerias and sea foam up from the sand and into your home?

Why get a mural?

Murals are one of the oldest art forms in the world... it is human nature to surround ourselves with art.  Although we may never know exactly why early man first put pigment on the walls of caves, the lasting importance of the images created cannot be understated.  Those early cave paintings were the first signs of an innate predisposition that has blossomed into a tool for defining cultures, conveying emotions and beliefs.  With the development of our modern societies and modern thoughts came the evolution of art.  Primitive pigments kept pace with new innovations in science which heralded new movements in art.  With the advent of tempura paints came beautiful gold gilded paintings in the gothic era, the discovery of oil paints opened the doors for the masterpieces of Da Vinci, Caravaggio, and Titian to name a few.  At each step murals played an important role in peoples lives.  Whether in homes in Pompeii or on the ceiling of Sistine Chapel few art forms have spanned such a wide range of applications and motivations for their creation.
